about

Through our circular ascension
We've come to this point

Everything else so distant
Only this beautiful blue breath

Ozone and emptiness falling
Into this one moment

This now

~Darwin Raymond

"One of the main reasons I like to review music is my desire to hear something new & to be exposed to ideas I would not normally come across. I love the thrill of the new ... deliberately approaching someone’s musical creation with as little baggage as possible so I can hear it fresh and untainted.

It is thus that I come to "Open Sky" ... an EP by Darwin Raymond on the fab netlabel Subterranean Tide. I am, to my shame, unfamiliar with Darwin's work - not through choice, more a result of there being simply too much music out there - and approach this EP with only the good name of Subterranean Tide to influence me.

My initial reaction was very positive - "Open Sky" features a series of remarkably creative soundscapes that feature the imaginative use of field recordings underpinned by synths or acoustic guitar. I found these tracks both warmly engaging and deeply immersive ... I was able to lose myself in their individual narratives in the most delightful of ways ... transported, as I was, to an alternate today.

What I marvel most at, while listening to "Open Sky", is Darwin's ability to bring the best out of both the field recordings he liberally uses and the sparse, minimal synth drones and melodies that he plays. The field recordings do not overwhelm or stand out unnecessarily, and the melodies and drones aren't so repetitive as to dull or bore the listener. No idea is overplayed by Darwin and the found-sounds, in particular, are not overused to the point of monotony.

It is important to note that the length of the tracks play an key role here too, with no idea dragged out beyond its ideal size and no sound becoming too familiar as to be contemptuous.

These are, for me, the signs of a talented musician ... someone who knows the balancing point, the magic point between ’not enough’ and ’too much’. Darwin gets it ’just right’ on "Open Sky" and kudos to him for this because, in doing so, he has created an EP of both magnificence and significance ... one I highly recommend."
