Painting 21:52

about

I painted a thousand words
on the belly of the universe.

And in my hands the colors pour over,
embalming humanity
and tinting tears.

I traced upon the sky
and knitted in the tides.

It begins with a hesitant crackle and slowly builds with high pitched frequencies, and layer upon layer Fernando builds his piece, much like a painter would layer their colors upon one another to create voluminous textures. Carvalho joins the Subterranean Tide roster after releases with Somehow and Twisted Treeline Recordings with this 21 minute journey into sound design, ambient filigree and emotional exploration via the use of intricate synth work and field recordings.

The piece is not rushed and opens with six minutes of dense and microcosmic meandering before hypnotic bass waveforms are introduced to the listener, invoking a trance like state that gels perfectly with swirling synth attacks and a background that suggests someone longing for hope in a very dark place. Not before long the piece enters a third movement of plaintive and stretching electronic musings, each sound reaching up into the sky to touch the clouds.

The genius in Carvalho’s work here is how it is all tied together. Each movement of this 21 minute piece pays homage to what came before it, little melodies are retained, albeit in an altered state and interact with their new surroundings. By the end you feel as though you are complete, and everything has been resolved.
